Welcome to another episode of War of the Mind, where we tackle challenging mental health issues and highlight the power of resilience and redemption, a deep dive into addiction, recovery, self-discovery and overcoming adversity. Today's topic, although heavy, is quite crucial understanding suicide, its connection with the ongoing pandemic and addiction. First off, I'd like to share a quote by author Atticus, who said it's okay to feel unstable, it's okay to disassociate, it's okay to hide from the world, it's okay to need help, it's okay not to be okay. Your mental illness is not a personal failure. Let's set the stage with some statistics. The World Health Organization reports approximately 800,000 suicides every year. That's one person every 40 seconds. Disturbing, yes. Hence why discussing suicide and suicide prevention is important, more so during what happened during COVID-19 pandemic. So that brings us to our first segment Suicide and COVID-19.

Speaker 1:

The pandemic has amplified mental health conditions across the globe. There's fear of social isolation, economic uncertainty. People worry about the virus itself, losing loved ones to it, but they're also concerned about job security, although life stresses brought into sharp focus have potentially escalated the risk of suicide. To quote Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, the most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss and have found their way out of the depths. Remember, we're all treading uncharted waters, grappling with heightened insecurities, so please reach out to someone if you find yourself struggling. Self-validation in these unwieldy times is key.

Speaker 1:

For our next segment, we'll delve in deeper into the intricate link between addiction and suicide. Addiction can make an individual six times more susceptible to suicide. Persistent substance abuse can exacerbate mental health conditions or highlight hidden issues like depression, anxiety, influencing these unfavorable odds. On top of that, characteristics of addiction, such as impulsivity, hopelessness or guilt could turn you towards dire outcomes. And another quote from Trent Reznor I've struggled with depression and addiction and if you're out there wrestling those demons as well, know this it can get better. Now for our final segment.

When dealing with suicidal tendencies, early intervention is paramount. Prevention strategies must take a multi-pronged approach, integrating individual care with community-focused efforts, all by digital platforms for widespread accessibility. Amid this panic pandemic, online addiction support groups have been invaluable. Platforms such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous continue to operate virtually, providing several individuals with crucial lifeline. One quote that comes to mind from Christopher Reeve once you choose hope, anything's possible. And I believe that, no matter how much darkness we face, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel. To reduce feelings of isolation during lockdowns, building robust online communities can work wonders. Digital platforms could serve as an emotional tether, reducing feelings of loneliness and disconnectedness during social distancing and quarantine measures.

Let's not forget amidst all these challenges, circumstances lies an opportunity for us all to grow with crisis. With crisis comes adapt, adaption, adaptation and resilience. It might seem insurmountable now, but remember Carl Rogers' words the good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination. Now, wrapping up our show today, I'd like to emphasize that mental health matters now more than ever. Crisis has shown us in no uncertain time, in no certain time terms, that even amidst it, amidst all of the scientific advancements, there's urgent need for mental health care to move front and center in our health care responses. So, as we, I leave you with another quote from Carl Jung I am not what happened to you, to me, I am what I choose to become.

And yes, we are in the throes of global pandemic, but it also is an opportunity, a chance to highlight mental health, the silent crisis we often push aside.
