Speaker 1:

And welcome back to another show of War of the Mind. I'm your host, lauren Johnson, here, and today's topic will be redefining resilience. Now, I'm not sure how familiar many of you are with the stoicism going on right now, and stoics, the modern stoic it's becoming more and more popular. It talks about resilience becoming tougher, calmer, good character, wisdom Basically the stuff that worked back then for the Roman Empire and emperors and stuff like that is the same stuff that applies to today and it's amazing how you can read one of them books, and it's the exact same of how today's society is and how you can apply it. So today, when we're talking about redefining resilience, you know resilience is increasingly viewed as a dynamic process, not fixed trait. I firmly believe, you know, it's not something that's passed down, hereditary, it's something I've. I think you can learn it, but I don't believe that you, I think you have to be born with it, because there's, you know, family members that are in the same boat, that have the same, say, injury, and one wants to play the pity card and one wants one just keeps the mouse shut and keeps going and keeps fighting and overcomes, goes to the next thing, has a setback, overcomes it. Resilience is overcoming all those setbacks and, you know, doing it at God's grace and having patience and realizing that it's okay to get frustrated. It's okay to, you know, get somewhat angry, as long as you can control it. So resilience is not immunity to stress but the ability to bounce back and grow from it. That's the biggest part about being resilient is learning from those setbacks and failures and learning to grow from them. Academic thinking on resilience emphasizes its dynamic nature, emphasizing the importance of social support, coping strategies, especially the context of adverse experiences. So if you experience major setbacks, it's just recommending that you have, you know, social coping strategies to deal with every situation. In my past as there is being a one who's, I would say, is resilient I've witnessed countless individuals facing trauma, adversity, and I've seen many emerge stronger. I've seen many fall on their face and not get back up. Today's show we have insights that I've gained from the research that I've done and just life experience and expertise in the area, and that's on building resilience due to trauma.

Speaker 1:

Now, understanding trauma. Trauma is deeply distressing experience that can leave lasting scars. It's essential to recognize that trauma is normal reaction to abnormal events. Acknowledging your pain is the first step toward healing. As far as trauma, the next would be seeking a professional help. Do not hesitate to reach out to mental health professionals. Therapy can provide guidance strategies. Cope with trauma effectively.

Speaker 1:

You have to embrace your emotional expression. So that goes back to like when I was talking about the Stoics, that they embrace their emotional mindset. They have the ability to control, stay calm in the moment. A lot of us do it letting go and building that strong emotional distress for the hard times and a lot of it is practice Allowing yourself to feel, suppressing your emotions can hinder your progress. Cry, vent and express yourself in healthy ways. Next would be build a support network.

Speaker 1:

When you have trauma, lean on friends and family who care about you, your wellbeing. Social support is a powerful factor in resilience and it's who you surround yourself with. I can surround myself with whoever I want, but if they're unhealthy individuals and negative all the time, that's gonna rub off on me. So, cultivating self-compassion, be gentle with yourself, understand setbacks happen. Self-compassion is crucial in your journey to resilience. Now, when you're developing coping strategies, some of the research suggests that adaptive coping mechanisms, such as problem solving, emotional regulation, can also enhance resilience, fostering a growth mindset. See challenges as opportunities for growth.

Speaker 1:

See now, I was raised I was kind of always taught failure wasn't an option and so that's what I had in my head. So then when I, everything came pretty easy to me, I didn't have to work too hard at stuff. And when I started facing adversity and setbacks I didn't know what to do. I hadn't faced adversity and had to overcome it and face it head on. And it was tough for a while. I really struggled. At the first time I failed in life and felt like it was the end of the world, and it's taken time to teach myself. You know that All those minor setbacks and major setbacks are all ways for us to learn and grow and continue on our journey in life.

Speaker 1:

Physical well-being a healthy body supports a healthy mind. Regular exercise, a balanced diet and sufficient sleep can boost your resilience. And there's also meditation and mindfulness practices. Practicing mindfulness can help you stay grounded in the present moment and reduce the impact of traumatic memories. Find meaning in your adversity. Identifying a purpose or meaning in your suffering can be a powerful motivator for resilience. Now I know I listed off a lot of ways to help boost your resilience. Navigating trauma isn't easy, but with the right approach it's possible to emerge stronger on the other side. Seek professional help, strong yourself with support network and remember that resilience is a journey, not a destination. By understanding trauma, practicing self-compassion and adopting healthy coping strategies, you can master the art of resilience and thrive after adversity. And that's what we got for today.

Speaker 1:
