Loren Johnson:

Welcome to another podcast show of War of the Mind. I'm your host, lauren Johnson. Today we're going to talk about social violence, anti-bullying and bullying the workplace. Now, school violence, anti-bullying and bullying in the workplace are all serious issues that can be devastating impact to victims, which all derive around trauma. In this episode we'll explore the different types of bullying, what you do if you are being bullied and how to create a more bully-free environment.

Loren Johnson:

Now school violence has really been on the news a lot. Who wants to see school violence? None of us want to see our kids get harmed at church, at school, even church. The extent of bullying that is taking place these days is just outrageous, and it's where it's even crept out into the workplace. For us adults, I think it's just kind of the day in age where we live in, where people think they can get away with it and it's okay and it's not. Especially with this month being Mental Health Awareness Month, I firmly believe this should be an issue that we raise a lot more, because how many of us have been bullied in a workplace?

Loren Johnson:

I know I have, when I was working at my last place, just because I didn't fit in or my background didn't fit in. What was there then? All of a sudden, I kind of felt like I got pushed out. I could have chose to stay, but why should I sit there and have to put myself through it when I want to be somewhere where I want to enjoy my job, enjoy the stuff I do for fun and enjoy my job? I don't want to have a job that I dread going to work and to be bullied every day by somebody who can't see past their own imperfections and feel the need to bring somebody else down. And I'm not going to go out there and name people. They know who they are. That's not what the show is about. The show is about raising awareness, helping our young people and us adults.

Loren Johnson:

You know, school violence is that type of violence that occurs in the school setting. This can include physical assault, sexual assault, verbal abuse and bullying. School violence can be a devastating impact on victims, their families and the entire school community. Now, anti-bullying anti-bullying is an effort to prevent or stop bullying. Anti-bullying programs can be implemented in schools and to this day, they still are being implemented. I don't feel like we're where we need to be. I feel like we have a lot of work left to do, and the reason being is you're seeing it overflow into the workplace of adults now. So that's just this day and age where we made it okay for our kids to do it. Now also, our kids are growing up and they're seeing it that it's okay to do and it's not Now. Hindsight to that is where do you think these kids are learning from?

Loren Johnson:

When you go into a job and you're sitting there having people spread rumors about you just to get you try to get kicked out, that falls under bullying. You know, I'm not sure why people do that when you're not there to affect their business. You're there to promote yours and do the best you can do for yourself and for people. To stoop to that level I have a real issue with. And bullying in the workplace is any type of repeated, unwanted, harmful behavior towards a coworker or subordinate. Bullying in the workplace can take many forms, including verbal abuse, such as insults, put downs, threats. Physical abuse, such as hitting, shoving, blocking someone's way. Social isolation, such as excluding someone from meetings, social events. Work sabotage, such as grieving someone, impossible deadlines and setting them up for failure.

Loren Johnson:

Now, where I was working, I worked for myself, but I rented an office space at a art studio where everybody had their own niche and if you didn't fit in, my impression was they're going to run you out. And that's kind of what it got to the point of and I wasn't going to have any part of it and I, yeah, still looking for a new studio. It's just sad that people take it to that limit, you know, especially coming from my background. I don't know if any of you want to check out our website, ljvoiceprojectcom. You'll see a little bit about myself on there and some of the stuff I've been through. And you know, to have somebody call out and say you're nobody in good amount to know, but nothing in this world, so why bother? Really really was something I, when I put this out there. I wasn't putting it out there to claim fame to be the best podcast artist. I'm just trying to share my expertise and my wisdom that I've been through and the resilience that I've built over the years to overcome all these life obstacles. And I'm not anywhere near bragging. I have more problems than most, because I'm sure there's somebody out there who has more and I'm just here to raise awareness, explain my side of stuff that's happened to me and what's kept me gone, you know, and if I can help somebody, then I did my part and I firmly do not believe in this bullying BS. That's one thing I would do not stand for and advocate for.

Loren Johnson:

Bullying in the workplace can have, you know, a devastating impact on victims that can lead to stress, anxiety, depression and even suicidal thoughts. It can also damage a person's self-esteem, confidence and make it difficult for a person to do their job. You know, and I got to the point when I was there like I didn't even want to record because they were banning stuff on the walls. They were, you know, hitting broom handles on the floor just to mess with my recording and to where my contract. I could be there 24-7, but yet then all of a sudden next thing, I know I can't be there 24-7 because one of the ladies said I was sleeping there when I wasn't. I was going there at night so I could record, since that was the only quiet time. Well, that turned into them having somebody stay there for security because they were afraid I would break into other people's units and I just felt like if I gave them a reason to, that'd be one thing, but when I kept to myself and busted my butt to work on my stuff and keep to myself. That's where I took it personal and the biggest downfall, you know, the biggest thing I learned from this is you know I wasn't ready for that part of social media putting it out there and getting that little bit of backlash or the negative comments. And you know that's just something that comes with the territory and it's something I got to get past. And if I've gotten past some of the seller stuff, there's no reason why I can't get past this.

Loren Johnson:

What do you do if you're bullied? If you're bullied, there are a few tips you can do. Talk to the bully directly. If you feel safe doing so. You can talk to the bully and explain how their behavior is affecting you. Report the bullying to your supervisor or HR director. If this is at a workplace, your employer has legal obligations to protect you from bullying. Now, I don't know how this works. This could be different than my situation was, where I was renting an office space and there was probably, you know, another 20 businesses in there. So it's not like you know. That's. The other thing is then the office space tried changing my contract of when I could be there, my hours of work, even though they weren't my boss, so I don't know. If any of you got any tips on that and want to feel free to write us. I'd love to hear from you Now how to create more bully free environments. There are a number of things that can be done to create a more bully free environment. These include, you know, having an anti-bullying policy. Training employees on what bullying is and how to prevent it. Taking bullying a compliment complaints seriously and investigating them properly. Creating a culture of respect and inclusion.

Loren Johnson:

Now I know we covered a little bit a little fast here, but I just want to pump one of these episodes out to you. It's been a while. We're working on Hammering Out a couple other episodes podcasts since I'm a big, huge, avid bow hunter and it's getting there time of year up here in Wisconsin, and so watch for a new podcast on that. It's going to be called Grunt, rattle and Shoot. It's for just Ray or Josh, a mobile hunter who you know is looking for little tips to hear from the experts. I've got a couple people that I know have signed up to come on the show and give their contributions. It's kind of just give that rut report anything to help the fellow hunter, and then we're also gonna venture out to what we call the legacy sports unlimited, and that we're gonna run season one during the NFL football season and World Series just updating sports and anything from Monday morning quarterback to sports injuries, so you can get your best team on the field for your fantasy football league. So, yeah, so additional tips bowling, like you said, be a good role model.

Loren Johnson:

Children adults learn by watching the people around them. If you want to prevent bullying and be kind and respectful to others, teach bullying. Teach children about bullying. Help children to understand that bullying is not how to identify it. Teach them how to stand up to bullies, how to be, how to report bullying to a trusted adult. Create a supportive environment. Children and adults need to feel safe and supported in order to thrive. Create an environment where the people you feel comfortable and speaking up about bullying and where they know that they will be taken seriously. By following these tips, we can help create a more bullying free world.

Loren Johnson:

Now I want to thank all my get. I mean all. You know the help received. It is mental health a month. You know mental health and resilience. People are increasingly interested in learning how to build resilience and mental health. Challenges such as anxiety and depression and stress. Resilience in the workplace you know employers are looking for ways to create new, new and more resilient workplace workforce that can thrive in the face of the giant change and challenge. I've done a lot of art projects and if I can give you any ideas, I'd love to. You know I'm not the greatest at some of them, but I've gotten a lot better.
